The artist Pen and ink drawings by illustrator, painter, and longtime Young collaborator James Mazzeo help tell the story of the Green family generations. Young even worked a character based on Mazzeo into the story as Earl Green, who experiences an epiphany and becomes inspired by events described in the songs. A number of Mazzeo’s own acrylic paintings appear in the book, represented as being in the fictional town’s gallery. In real life, Mazzeo was one of San Francisco’s pioneer creators of psychedelic light shows.
