Font Smart: Making the Right Buys (cont'd)
P22 Type Foundry bills its typefaces as “inspired by Art, History, and sometimes Science.” P22 typefaces are available in four collections for those who need a wide range of fonts. The Works includes 168 fonts for $849.95. Most foundries and resellers offer sizable packages or even complete libraries for best value per font.
GarageFonts was originally established to distribute some of the first type designs created for the legendary Raygun magazine. Its collection has grown to more than 750 original designs.
The Font Bureau offers a special value “pick 200” package: Any 200 fonts from its retail library at $20 per style for a single CPU. Pricing varies according to number of CPUs, but always represents a great deal.
Type packages come in various sizes, but are generally meant to form an affordable foundation for a typeface collection. The ITC Elements package includes more than 200 fonts from International Typeface Corporation. Find it at www.fonts.com/fontpackages/librariescollections.htm.
Linotype offers a collection of all the typefaces designed by the legendary Adrian Frutiger in a 3-CD, 173-font set. Like most font houses, Linotype also offers packages tailored to specific applications or themes. The Seasons Greetings package includes 50 fonts suited for cards, recipe books, flyers, and signs. It starts at $45.
Vista Sans, a unique new typeface family in six weights from Emigre, is both functional and expressive. It includes alternate companion fonts with italic and flourished details for greater versatility in headlines and word logos. Find it at www.emigre.com.
Adobe is offering Creative Suite 2 users a new interpretation of the classic typeface Garamond simply for registering their CS2 software. Garamond Premier Pro’s five weights in four distinct size ranges—caption, text, subhead, and display— are modeled on original punchcuts. An OpenType family, Garamond Premier Pro contains an extensive glyph complement, including central European, Cyrillic, and Greek characters, and takes advantage of the advanced type manipulation capabilities of Creative Suite 2 applications.
