Making duplicates
There are several ways to make patterns in Illustrator. The following technique works best when duplicating a few objects, icons, or logos at a time.

From “Seeing I to i,” V10N4

1. In Illustrator, select the image you want to duplicate. In this selection we changed the arrow’s color to brown to add interest, then grouped the elements into one object (Command-G).
2. Using the Selection tool (solid arrow), click on the object and press Option- Shift, dragging it to the right. Align the duplicate object to the right edge of the original. Do not deselect the duplicate.
3. Press Command-D to duplicate the object as many times as you want, making a row.
4. Select the entire row, and group the objects by pressing Command-G. Using the Selection tool, drag the row down while pressing Option- Shift. Align the row with the bottom edge of the previous row.
5. Now you can duplicate (Command-D) the row as many times as you’d like.

Quick Tip
You can use the duplicate command (Command-D) for other things, such as sizing an image. Select the image and double click on the Scale tool. Type in a percentage and click OK. Then press Command-D to resize the image as often as necessary.
