Re:Design Winners: Brochure
A service line for expecting parents and a youth-oriented ministry both have redesigned brochures that are among this year's winners.
December 2007
Health for Women
Pastels, pacifiers & Photoshop aid expectant parents.

University Health System
Designer: Becky Padilla
Project team: Lauren Graham, Irene Sandate, Susan Douglass, Dawn Bishop, Irene Lopez, Marisol Leija
Client: Health for Women
Contact: www.universityhealthsystem.com

Health for Women helps guide expectant parents through pregnancy, prenatal care and the birth of the baby. The Health for Women service line is the direct result of the collaboration of three Bexar County (Texas) healthcare providers: San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, University Health System and UT Medicine San Antonio. This program includes extensive educational material for expectant parents.

Becky Padilla, graphic design and branding coordinator for University Health System, is responsible for the look and feel of marketing material created for the hospital and six outpatient clinics. She says the original set of brochures for the Health for Women service line was printed in a variety of colors. The new brochures incorporate one palette of pastels—unifying the pieces. The pastels are inviting to new parents. Photography from the original brochures is recycled and refreshed with varied crops in the redesign. Since this is a partnership between the three healthcare providers, Padilla also created a unifying logo.

“One of the first times parents see their new baby is through the windows of the newborn nursery. Going with this theme, we created a ‘window’ on the final brochure,” says Padilla. All the brochures feature images of newborns and parents as well as baby items. The unifying pastel palette, imagery and typography is used consistently throughout the various pieces: Baby U, Special Deliveries Deserve Extra Special Attention, The Big Day, Well Mommy Care: After the Big Day and Caring for Your Baby.

1. Original
Nothing in the original design linked the multiple brochures in the Health for Women service line.

2. Redesign
A palette of pastels—typically associated with babies—unifies the redesigns.

Thoughts
Limited to in-house printing services and photography from the original brochures, the designer was able to bring together, refresh and reinvigorate the brochures with a simple palette and logo.
